cottage was very warm, well equipped, clean and comfortable.","body":"The garden sitting area was very pretty and the weather was so brilliant (early September) we were able to eat our breakfast outside in the sunshine every morning and it was very quite and peaceful, as although the cottage is situated on a road there is very little traffic; all we could hear was the soft bleating of sheep in a nearby field and birdsong. The property is situated on the south of the island which is supposed to have its own micro-climate being warmer and sunnier than the rest of of the island and this seemed definitely to be the case, and the tropical gardens at Ventnor, which are well worth a visit, are a testimony to this. \r\n\r\nThere is a very nice pub in Godshill called 'The Taverners', about 10 minutes drive from the cottage, which is very popular and the food is excellent , using all local produce, but you do need to book early as it is very popular. We also visited the 'Spyglass' in Ventnor which is right on the edge of the sea and sells delicious crab sandwiches; the crab is locally sourced from the island's fishermen. There is plenty of seating outside and inside it is distinctly quirky with loads of character. Another nice pub with a view is 'The Folly' on the Medina River which is very close to Osborne House,. Do visit Osborne House and gardens, it is an amazing place and in recent years Queen Victoria's private beach has been opened up to the public and you can bathe there, not fully clothed as Queen Victoria did (check out her bathing machine), or just relax on a deckchair with an ice-cream. \r\n\r\nWe have been on the Isle of Wight for day trips, but not for a full week and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and we would definitely like to go again and stay at 'Kitty's Loft' and if we are lucky Barbara and Kitty might have a 'cream tea' ready for our arrival as last time!","author":"Barbara","date":"2018-09-01","property_id":4090,"created_at":"2023-05-30T14:32:53.075Z","updated_at":"2023-05-30T14:32:53.075Z","rating":null,"rating_out_of":null,"date_of_stay":null,"sentiment":null,"rateable":false},{"id":8316700,"title":"We were greeted by a bad smell like drains or sewage.","body":"We located it to be the shower within the bedroom.The whole idea of a shower plonked in the corner full view of the room and onto carpet is an odd one.We had to buy bleach to try and get rid of the smell. The other shower cubicle was incredibly small no room to bend down to pick up soap without banging your head Also we have photos showing the green gunk growing inside and the hairs. The sofa in breakfast room had lots of feathers dust and rubbish under the cushions .The one dining chairs legged wobbled and my child fell off it only to discover screws are missing from underneath. The cups and plates had rings and food remnants on them. We were told car parking was good with on road parking available or a nearby carpark that was reasonable.We had to pay £65 for a week on top of what we had spent for the house.!! We were misled by photos that showed the beds to be further apart and we're convinced there were 2 double beds.The one photo shows a pine frame with no other bed in site convincing us if was a double instead the beds are so close it was hard to squeeze between them. As expecting an old house we expected thick old walls deadening noise instead it travelled really badly. We could hear next doors talking baby crying and every word or noise the kids said. when upstsirs . The door knob mentioned in a previous review is still very much broken causing a child to get locked in the bathroom causing a panic. We loved the view thought it was well equipped and we're grateful for the welcome bits. Downstairs, passers-by could look in as they walked along the pavement, hence the profusion of net curtains, which made the property decidedly claustrophobic. The ceilings are so high that all cosiness was lost upstairs. The colour scheme of blues and wood grain makes the house seem cold. From the kitchen area you have to cross the entrance hall to reach the dining room, which was a rather narrow, dark room. The games hamper was a bit of a mess with pieces of games spilling out of the boxes. It needed a good sort out.\r\nThe pub nearby was noisy and we heard late night drunken swearing and arguments. \r\nI knew when booking that the property had no outside space, but the close proximity to the neighbours windows and their outside space was uncomfortable; the house was an island. Every morning we didn't enjoy the revving of the neighbour's motorbike.\r\nWe could never park in the street near the property. We had to park in a public car park in the next street. The owner did give us a free pass for this but nevertheless it was an inconvenient walk.\r\nThe area of Sandown was really run down. The abandoned and derelict hotels on the nearby seafront were so depressing and the pier was horrible. I have to say it was the worst town and cottage I've ever stayed at. The setting is magnificent with hills all around and the most wonderful gardens on the property itself. There are two coastal walks immediately outside of the main gates, one in the direction of Shanklin and the other towards Bonchurch and Ventnor. One thing you need to be aware of is the bumpy road after the turn from the main road, towards Dunnose Magna. The fact that the National Trust have failed to cut back the hedgerow is another slight issue, however, you simply need to drive carefully and slowly. This was corrected during my stay after I complained.\nThe next day I hurt my lower back even more painfully on the same door. From what I can see of Fire door regulations, the maximum opening force for a firedoor appears to be 30N. We measured it to be 69N, using a suitcase weigh pull and converting from 6.9Kg to N - (on video). \nI informed Sykes by phone and email but found out later that they did not receive my emails. I had to use a whats app number after my stay.
